What is the job of a roofer?
- by siteadmin
Roofers are responsible for installing and repairing the protective coverings of a building that keeps its interior safe and dry. Roofers create waterproof barriers using a variety materials including bitumen or shingles. This prevents water seeping in and damaging structures and contents. Roofers can also use various tools and equipment to shape and hammer the shingles in place. Some roofers specialize on certain roofing materials or styles.
Roofing duties can include meeting clients to discuss roofing needs, and estimating materials and labor costs. To complete a job, roofers work closely with other construction professionals such as electricians and carpenters. A roofer may need to measure an existing roof in order to know its dimensions and pitch. After laying down a vapor shield, they build up layers of protective material. Roofing materials can be chosen by the client.
A roofer can lay a single ply membrane, made from a waterproof rubber or plastic, on flat or low-sloped roofs. This type of roof is often used for commercial roofs but can also be installed on residential roofs. Roofers will also use clay tiles or wooden shakes to cover steeply sloped roofs. Some roofers are experts in the installation and maintenance of green roofs. These roofs contain soil, plants and other materials to reduce urban heat islands.
The majority of residential roofs have shingles. Roofers must first prepare the surface for shingle application by spreading a tar-like substance and applying insulation. Roofers then nail overlapping shingle strips over top of the insulation. Roofers cover exposed nails and seal seams after the shingle layer has been installed. Roofers also use flashing — strips of metal, shingle, or both that are used to cover vent pipes, chimneys and other protrusions.
Many roofers prefer working in warm weather because they enjoy the challenge. Roofers must be able deal with extreme weather conditions, such as rain and snow. These can cause roofing to slow down or even stop. Roofers are also required to work long, as there is usually a deadline set to complete a project by the next major storm or snowfall. For this, roofers must be fast and accurate, especially when they are cutting shingles. Roofers must also be able use ladders and scaffolding in order to reach all parts of a roofing. Roofers must also wear safety harnesses while working.
